rarely go on Twitter and don’t read MSM, can someone give me the TLDR on the bird app mess?

Elon fired half employees. Then gave the remaining employees the option to click a link expressing their desire to stay employed at a more "hardcore twitter." At the deadline for this decision, he locked everyone out for the weekend.

Users did the math and freaked out wondering if the site would crumble. Now tbd.

Site is still up. Frankly I doubt Twitter will go down easily considering the scalable infra that's in place. I see mostly FUD and not a lot of insightful info into the internal state. By all accounts I know, core services are pretty resilient to critical failure.
