You must be getting your information from xTwitter. I suppose some states might still ban them to protect their pine trees, but there is no federal ban on black currants. Raw milk import and sale is not allowed only if they are under 60 days aged. People can still make it themselves if they want. Kinder surprise, yeah that ban is just dumb. 😅

Black and red currants were banned in 1911, the federal ban was lifted in 1967 but state bans still exist in many states — the result is there is still virtually no cassis consumption in the US. Raw milk cheeses under 60 days age are banned by the FDA since 1987, making illegal unpasteurized varieties of camembert, roquefort, epoisses, etc.

I thought I just said that 😅 I've often lamented not being able to get raw milk cheeses. But humans are pretty great. Regulations always beget creativity. We have red, white and black currants growing in our yard. The red came from Michigan and the white from an online store. The black currants are weeds here. We just pulled them up from a trail and planted in our yard. They are fantastic. We don't have much for pine trees here though. Mostly spruce.
