Art is inherently self-referential—it springs from personal expression and usually combines all the referential material within the artist’s context. But self-portraits as an exercise? They’re redundant. And if they’re not redundant, they’re arrogant. If they’re not arrogant, they’re certainly not humble. And if they’re none of the above, then they’re just plain boring.
