TIL a rear admiral historically commanded the ships on the rear of a fleet. The admiral commands the middle ships and the vice admiral the forward ships. It is apparently the least risky position and held by the junior most admiral in the fleet. This seems logical. I don’t know why I’m mildly surprised.I guess it’s more literal than I expected.
