I think you can have small open+safes, just not big open+safes

need for gatekeeping never goes away if you want safe

true, I concede - the minimum level of gatekeeping is definitely above 0. I think it scales exponentially relative to size. Small can be much more open than big. Fewer places for a wolf to hide, closer proximity of gatekeepers to center of operations

yeah def a case where size matters
and yet even small family systems often suffer from wolves*
who can act against wolves ie power relations figures into it all

*ps not comfortable that I've introduced this namecalling here. real wolves are not a problem in natural systems (when in balance ofc etc etc etc)!
