How does this reflect on a nation where certain pets are pampered and lead better lives than even humans, while other animals spend their entire lives in a putrid hell?

Probably the hardest pill to swallow for modern humans is that there is no difference between Fido and that BLT on your plate. 

I know we are biologically omnivores but if modern individuals can’t stomach slaughtering an animal first hand, perhaps they don’t deserve to consume the sanitized mass market version

I’m with you on all this. I’m just about being consistent in thought. 
It isn’t that lovable animals aren’t food, but that food animals are lovable. 

We know what suffering feels like and only a sociopath would think it feels any different for something with a central nervous system

Quite hard to convince people that their dogs are the same as their meat. We have a very unique relationship with a few animals that make them sacred cows (pun intended) -- in the west, dogs, horses, and maybe cats

The rest are "fair" game. I'm not even against eating animals, but the current system creates a concentration camp style existence for millions of beings every year. That's unfathomably cruel... 

Not sure how we escape this setup, since individual agency only goes so far under systemic pressure for supply to drive costs down no matter what, and for demand to see food as entertainment rather than nourishment
