Pursue at least one thing that matters to him... a crazy career, talent, goal, accomplishment, etc. Just say, what have you always wanted to try or do? After answer, you can say "great, let's make sure you do that before you graduate."

The benefits are: - He gets it out of his system i.e. gets over it. - He might be really good and be glad he started early. - At very least, builds that habit as you and @amitmukherjee mention. Plus more, of course.
