Is there a name for this phenomenon? I’m always amazed when people in terrible financial circumstances vote against things that would help them because one day they “may” be rich. I’ve never understood this.

It’s true. It’s a weird overlap of superstition, Pascal’s wager, and belief in karma. People 1) don’t want to be told what to do, and 2) will back fiscal policy that will benefit them when they finally “make it.”
