Interesting you are thinking this way. I dug up a little: "When telegraph linemen said 'direct on line,' they were referring to sending current through a line. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it was not until the 1950s that 'online' referred to computers and peripheral devices."

In short, these "on" and "line" took decades to turn into online. Wordings, with time, change. For now, it is on-chain. It can, with time, turn into onchain.
