An executive order President Donald Trump signed Monday night vows to end birthright citizenship in the U.S., despite broad legal consensus that the Constitution guarantees American citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil.

Historical estimates indicate that roughly 7.5 percent of all babies born in the U.S. going forward would no longer be considered automatic citizens. This would amount to more than 250,000 children each year, and in practice this number will likely be much higher if the definition of “illegal immigrant” is expanded to those who remain in the country after their parole or Temporary Protected Status programs are terminated.
