We returned home to Oahu from our weekend on Kauai to news of an active eruption on the Big Island, with fountaining lava…

… so tempting to jump flights over there to see and photograph it, but trying to use this week to recover a bit from the traveling, and focus on my rehab.

It has been quite a while since we have seen ocean entry lava, though… if that happens while we are here, I may not be able to resist.

The one time I visited Hawaii was in 2017 when it was super active. Hiked at night to go see the lava in the middle of nowhere and did the lava boat thing too. Was wild

Yep, the lava boat has been on my list, but I don’t think we’ve had an ocean entry lava flow since the big eruptions in 2018, so that’s quite a long time.

It was crazy! I guess at one point way after we went a lava rock flew out and through someone’s leg on the boat

I was thinking that was 2018, but I think you’re right. 2017, during the lava hose itself… I think the molten piece went through the roof of the boat and broke a passenger’s leg.
