A throwback Thursday post to on of my first experiences with the Big Island's volcano... this massive steam plume is where the lava was reaching the ocean back in 2009. Just the beginning of my journey to exploring the Big Island and it's amazing active lava flows.

Hmmmm… I would guess we were a mile from the ocean entry, so no smell from there, and on this angle, only the steam was visible rather than the lava itself. 

To get the lava shots, you have to do quite a bit of hiking across the lava fields. Mahalo!

Absolutely… it took me a few years after my arrival on Oahu (2005) to discover it, but my wife and I love visiting… Kauai might remain our favorite island, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we retire over to the Big Island.

Loved my time on the big island! A varied and wild place!!

The true fury is when the steam and the wind create a vortex… and unlike @intrepid’s single vortex chasing his sailboat, one of the Big Island’s lava photographers, Bruce Omori, captured a shot with 7 vortexes.
