Anybody got any theories on why no 3rd party Telegram app has got any traction? Also why there don't seem to be any really good ones? 

seems there could be ways to monetize them (free with scale + affiliate/txs/ads)

my understanding is that Telegram wants to create a miniapp (bot) appstore

have the client live inside of Telegram instead

wouldn‘t this create stronger incentives to build telegram clients? (more tx to monetize on/more mini apps to promote and monetize from)
