ie it's better to have 10,000 sparks than 0.01 eth, but it backfires when collecting, as paying 10,000 of something feels worse than 0.01

If you have to rely entirely on unit bias then it's not going to work out long term.

It's more important to make things friendly and easy for consumers now, and then the hard work is on what is being/bought sold to actually be valuable to the buyer long term.
