Back in the day when Zuck renamed his company and Apple goggles were all over Twitter it felt like this whole new world was being born.  

Now I never hear anyone talking about it.

What happened?

I don't even mean like cryptocurrency, I mean like I thought we were all supposed to be living in virtual reality by now. I still don't know anyone who ever used VR

it's in full work. it's just not called the metaverse i guess. Redstone's latest move with the MUD engine into the EVE universe might bring about new mentions of the term. Till then it's betaverse.
