so wife’s phone is full chatting about saving iMessages. gives me anxiety that my texts are slipping into the ether - although most are garbage but kinda makes me think about how reading correspondence from historical figures in the past is always interesting afaik there’s no iMessage backup offload service?

Probably not the answer you’re looking for but one route could be to upgrade to the next iCloud tier then wait a few years before the EU passes an international law that forces software companies to have exportable data. Then wait some more years until Apple decides to fold and market it as an innovation

right, not a terrible plan kind of an aside but i ran a nearly full Google Takeout earlier this year and it was >2TB of data without some key things included. just a wiiiiild amount of data in there

Definitely wild but also unsurprising if most of that is Google Photos. I have no grand conspiracies with big data companies but recently I’ve started setting up self-hosted solutions for myself and my family. Partly to escape vendor lock-in, partly to consolidate countless digital artifacts made in everyday life.
