me: "hi, yes, i'd like to create an ENS subdomain please" ENS: "great, that'll be $69" me: "...... it's usually like $7" ENS: "yeah, well today the tubes are full of frogs and toads so it's extra. sorry, maybe come back later"

This is called the "censorship resistance tax". Don't want to pay it, just register your name on cb.id. 😬

The gist is your name, ie. boscolo.cb.id, can be looked up just like any other ENS name. Under the hood it's calling a web2 service to retrieve the details. It means no gas costs to register or update the entry, but you're at the mercy of the web2 service to let you update and resolve it. No comment on CB's UX... πŸ₯΄

Same experience as you @j4ck.eth here. Confused about what I need it for. (I’ve had CB wallet since initial beta (?), I think).

think of cb.id-type things as an extension of ENS. You don't need both. "censorship resistance tax" is actually a good summary. cb.id = free but ultimately controlled by coinbase (not necessarily bad, just worth noting) .eth = onchain, no admin, which means gas to change things both work. options are good!
