I think of a channel as something inbetween a read-only announcement page and a curated discussion from highly engaged community members. It's not meant to be as busy as a Telegram chat - but also not meant to be *only* major announcements. They should let you find key posts, key contributors and key convos.

some of the alternative reddit-style clients probably would do this if/when channels are a protocol feature
