As a former Googler, I know what you mean. I was recruiting outside Google, and I could tell which hiring managers didn’t like the name-dropping. My best guess is that they didn’t get in, or didn’t like the company. 

To be honest I don’t really like name-dropping it much either, but my observation is that it denotes credibility in some circles. Also, people are generally proud of their work.
