What’s the state of Verkle Trees? Any production use cases? I’m guessing this is mostly a consensus layer solution and not something that’s used within the EVM?

Verkle trees are about flattening the MPT. It will give smaller proofs which will stateless clients. End game is to separate execution and validation cleanly so you can validate the chain with your phone while also dramatically increasing gas limits.
