Stopped by Etnodim to try on some vyshyvankas (Ukrainian embroidered shirts) 🇺🇦❤️ I love that we now have so many brands combining modern ethnic designs with folk traditions. The shirt on the right is dedicated to the legendary Slovo House, a unique apartment building in Kharkiv that housed Ukrainian writers, playwrights, and actors in the late 1920s and early 1930s. But it wasn’t just a residential building, it was the epicenter of the Ukrainian literary revival at the time, a vibrant creative hub that became a deathtrap. The Soviet government kept it under constant surveillance, which eventually led to repression and executions: 33 were killed, while others were exiled or sentenced to death in prisons. The extermination of this entire generation of powerful Ukrainian authors was later called the “Executed Renaissance.” The symbols on the shirt are dedicated to some of the writers, based on their creations.
