minted this photo on rodeo.club (smooth, simple, fun) and realized this may be one of the last photos i will ever have of this sculpture. its a 60-foot tall, 25 ton steel sculpture by 90yo Mark di Suvero that's been overlooking breakwater since 2001. when i found out its getting removed later this year and returning to mark's private residence, i felt a strange sense of grief. this sculpture is tightly embedded into my many vantage points of my everyday in venice. i see it running on the beach, walking on the boardwalk, or surfing the break. i stand underneath this sculpture most mornings, cappuccino in hand, watching the waves and sifting through the endless thoughts running through my mind. is it fair to feel sad? it was only ever intended to be a temporary installation, never a permanent fixture. yet here we are, 20+ years later. "there is nothing that is permanent in the world," mark di suvero says. funny how so many of the best things in life work that way.
