gm.  Aerial shot of our sailboat next to a blue hole in the ocean last week.  I was asked a few questions about what a blue hole is and why the one in the original post below appears green.

Blue holes are underwater karst caves. The karst in places like the Bahamas is predominantly limestone, formed from ancient reefs. When the roof of a cave system collapses, it creates the ‘hole.’ The deeper the hole, the darker the shade of blue.

The holes on land, like the one in yesterday’s post, often appear slightly greenish due to tannins from surrounding plants and a slightly higher nutrient load, which gives the water a greener tinge.

Sadly our time is almost up in the Bahamas .  So sublimely beautiful here, like a wonderland, but we need to start moving east in this disturbance in the trade winds next week. 

Hiked up to this ‘blue’ hole today.  Had an amazing green hue.
