Motivation & Legacy Willie O’Ree broke the NHL’s color barrier as the first Black player in league history. Despite being legally blind in one eye from an injury, he kept his condition a secret and continued playing at a high level. His perseverance, skill, and love for the game paved the way for diversity in hockey. O’Ree later became an ambassador for the NHL’s diversity and inclusion programs, inspiring generations of young players to push through adversity. His message: > "If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you're right." In 2018, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame for his impact on the sport. His story is a testament to resilience, breaking barriers, and inspiring change.
