Today is the birthday of the most beautiful and inspiring woman I know—my 96-year-old Babushka. Born in 1928 in Ukraine, she has lived through some of the harshest realities life can offer: collectivization, famine, World War II, repressions, and years of exile in Siberia. She has seen the worst of humanity and endured unimaginable hardship. And yet, through it all, she remains the kindest and optimistic woman I have ever known. She is my heroine - the person who inspires me to see the beauty in life even when it’s hard to find. Her strength and grace will always remind me of the importance of holding onto what’s good and finding a way through the bad. In my life and art I create, I want to honor her by building a legacy that carries forward what she’s taught me—importance of cresting a bridge between the pain of the past and the hope for a better future. Her life is proof that love and kindness can survive anything.

What a difficult time she had to endure… Until what year did her exile in Siberia last? I admire your grandmother's resilience and strength of spirit, and most importantly, the hardest thing of all — preserving herself, her kindness, and her humanity. Happy Birthday to your grandmother!
