Was there such a tradition in your countries? It was especially popular to beat out carpets in winter.

Yes! In those days there were hardly any vacuum cleaners, plus people thought it made the carpets look fresh 😃...everyone did it.  And do you know the Soviet love of hanging carpets on the walls ? I used to laugh about it when I still see carpets on the walls in old apartments and when I was cold in Germany I thought it was a good idea to insulate the walls with carpets 😂😂😂
