Before birth, in the womb, a baby’s main sensory experience is sound. There’s almost no visual input, so the baby doesn’t rely on it. Instead, it perceives sounds like the mother’s heartbeat, the flow of blood, her voice, and noise from the outside. This happens through vibrations in the amniotic fluid, which are felt across its body, especially on the skin.
Anzieu talks about the difference between the “self” (soi) and the “ego” (moi). He says the self is a deeper, more basic part of who we are and develops before the ego. Without visuals, the baby’s sense of self is shaped mostly through sound.
We first experience life through sound. 1 reply
