My take on FC’s unspoken etiquette after 20+ months here: - Debate ideas, not people. Never engage in ad hominem attacks. Don’t let your ego take things personally. Everyone must leave feeling smarter, not angrier. - Make a genuine effort to steelman opposing views before replying. Find your own blind spot, even if buried deep. Assume good and sincere intentions in others. - Take this as an experimental lab to get to the truth together, rather than to prove anyone wrong. Treat it as a PvE game, not Squid Games. What else?

It’s when you deliberately pause to think about how you can strengthen the other person’s argument instead of weakening it. It’s a counter intuitive thing to do when faced with an argument that your gut reaction is to reject. But that person is holding their viewpoint for a reason, and even if that reason is flawed, there may be other reasons why the argument itself has merit. It’s a way to force oneself to think deeper about a topic than play the blue/red team game of just repeating the same clichés

Engaging in good faith with the strongest version of an opposing argument, also known as being charitable in your interpretation of their view
