Why does saying "I work in crypto" feels so cringey and awkward? Feels like the "crypto" word itself is too loaded, meaning scams, get rich quick, and 'crypto bro' culture. I think we've had it great with the Web3 storytelling. It was the strongest narrative we've had: Web1: "Read-Only" -> Web2: "Read-Write" -> Web3: "Read-Write-Own" Yet 'Web3' isn't trendy anymore. I don't use it myself much. It's like after the Metaverse, GameFi, and NFT bubbles we stopped pushing the 'Web3' story, because.... it got cringey as well? But I think Web3 is the single best narrative that unifies what crypto has to offer. Even more now than in 2020-22 bull cycle due to AI. The value of censorship resistance, user ownership, and privacy is important to many. Yet, most people view crypto not as a solution, but as a step toward a dystopian future. We're terrible at selling crypto... I mean the Web3 vision to the masses. Maybe I should push the Web3 term once again.

Yeah, that's spot on. I say I work in tech or IT. If they ask more about it I go say web3, but I immediately clarify that I’m not involved in scams 😅

Depending on who I’m talking to I’ll usually say “I’m a programmer”. Then if they ask a follow up question I’ll mention Bitcoin or crypto. But unless the person knows about the industry I won’t offer it up ffirst.

Onchain has been a bit more approachable! Feels a tad less full new change (3rd edition of the internet). Talks more to the literal vs abstract and still includes many of those values indirectly.

NFT are even compared to Internet Explorer 😄 Maybe it's not about crypto, it's more about startup / VC culture. How are being used the millions / billions of dollars raised? "Could have been spent better" 99% of the time.

It's mostly because we are not delivering. I use the term Web3 every day, but the thing is, people do not see it as the next step in tech evolution, because we're not delivering anything (not anything of course, just making it sound more dramatic 😁). However, what we have created so far is a bunch of online casinos, trading platforms that usually get rugged or hacked, some metaverse attempts, that have no logical use case... And, of course GameFi, which is... well that's gaming. We promote the degen lifestyle and expect to have adoption. Honestly I think that most of the Web3 users just want the adoption to have more inexperienced users they could extract the value from...

I think for people crypto = digital scam token, used in dark web web3 = no idea, but it could be more familiar and recognizable as an evolution of the current web (no one knows is called web2)

i stick with web3 as no one ever knows what it means anyway, so i get to do the web1-web2-web3 ladder and explain it like a parallel world built for something better with wide arms open at the end like "charities, RWA, anything you can think of". saying crypto is worse as they start asking for trading tips and i have to run away throwing bananas yelling nooo i don’t give financial advice or running away and they scream at me "scaaammmeeeers!"
