I guess it's either they did that, or they kept paying a comparable amount to browser providers and competitors like Apple to be the default search engine.

So if everybody just used their chrome, then they never have to worry about being removed from default.

Google also got it backwards. They force fed Chrome downloads for everyone using google.com last decade.

If it was done by paid search engine advertisements, the cost would likely have been tens of billions of dollars.
