I wasn't involved in this at all, i know nothing about it apart from Silk Road and that Ross was jailed. I think life sentence is way too big, but he was a 'drug dealer' or at least a middle-man. I definitely think soft drugs should be legal, but they were selling some dark shit over there too. He obviously served way more than he should have, but i think some jail time was earned by his actions. Can you please tell me more about why people rally for Ross and why was it such a big thing apart from the fact that it was the biggest drug market on the dark web? I want to understand the situation, not looking to argue, etc... i don't have a strict position on this. Thanks

The whole Silk Road and Ross saga are a big thing amongst the web3 community because it was really the first major use case for Bitcoin and because generally libertarian ideals are strongly represented in crypto. Like you said, most people believe the sentence he got was too harsh considering that he didn't commit any violent acts (though he certainly he attempted to). Most of what was on the site were drugs as you mentioned. There were also fake IDs and pornography. Ross didn't really set out to make money from the enterprise in the beginning. In general he was looking to provide a way for people to buy/sell items as long as the items wouldn't cause harm to others. Proponents argue that dark web marketplaces are a safer way for people to purchase contraband as it doesn't expose you to street dealers/street violence and like ebay there are reviews etc so people can have a better idea what they are taking. That kind of answer your question?
