I guess it's probably not used day to day but it should definitely have been taught in high school, no?

Ehh. How often does your average person use that term? It doesn't seem relevant to the day-to-day affairs of your average person. 

(yes, awareness of capture of the government by wealthy people is a valid thing to be aware of, but knowing the term for it doesn't help pay for groceries)
