It seems like Trump is genuinely trying to destroy the Canadian economy and might even be serious that the goal is forcibly annexing Canada. He said he’s “not expecting any concessions”(?) and now wants to “get rid of that artificially drawn” border between the two countries. These tariffs are predicated on a nonexistent fentanyl influx from Canada to the U.S. People I know in Ottawa are genuinely alarmed and think this is for real.

I live not far from Ottawa. I have an undergraduate degree in economics and a masters in public policy. My neighbor and friend was the longest serving speaker of the house. I've lobbied the Liberal Party successfully. Just to put my opinion on the matter in context.... Trump definitely wants to annex Canada but Canada will not go silently into the night. 60% of the oil imported by the USA comes from Canada. Lumber, precious metals, rare earth minerals, and peat moss are imported by the US in large amounts from Canada. Cars cross US/Canadian/Mexican borders about 6-7 times before they are completed. Millions of Americans rely on electricity generated in north of the border. Canada is already talking about 100% tariffs targeting Tesla as well as other targeted tariffs to retaliate. This will get messy very quickly. I'm not particularly concerned about the whole thing as long as he doesn't try to use military force to take land.
