As an Engineer, what has been better for your career advancement/resume building? A degree from a University or Time spent on the job getting experience? I lack a degree, but spent some time working as an Engineer in semiconductors. It looks great on the resume, but wanting to gauge how valuable it is by itself.

E.g. in semiconductor field: it really is hard to learn about MatSci on your own and just go hard at it. It helps also to have a lab, so you don't have to buy fancy equipment yourself. That being said, a few semiconductor PhD folks that I know, are now doing something completely unrelated lmao so there is that

Having to buy fancy equipment is a good proxy to decide whether or not to go to university. And the decision to get some 🧯 at your private workshop. Wafer handling at home is less desirable than a 3D printer. Yet a great aspect of uni is being surrounded by passionate people, when possible.

That is a great point - yes the passion and intellectual camaraderie is usually great too, if you can find it - more so the higher levels I presume, and just nice to share that in general with others The closest I’ve seen that is also R&D or research organizations - also has better pay than PhDs

Yes indeed, passion is the point, rather than whether uni or not. And yes, different pay grade :)

Makes me think about how whenever I'd read about AT&T Bell Labs, and Xerox PARC (I'd think I love this! How can this be done today?) because of that exact nature of passion into inquiry and creating new things that comes from curiosity driven but pragmatic research (that is often collaborative!)

Under the current financial paradigm, isn’t SV as a whole the current instance? Co-localised, many small and big independent companies, fluid movement for engineers across these companies, fluid funding, similar average attitude, fed on government funding… Centralised yet distributed.

Makes me want to ask @vgr and @yak for a Fermi estimate: What would be the cost of a new PARC? Betting it would be out of reach to gather that much money.

Agreed - there are many institutions in SVs, some more business focused than others, but lots of R&D, some that come to mind: Amazon Lab126, Meta Reality labs, Samsung, ASML Research, Hyundai Cradle / Robotics bay area, Microsoft Research, Meta AI, Special Projects Group at Apple, etc etc
