It's a proxy for Deep Green Future vs Bright Green Future. If you're an advocate of Deep Green then you want everyone moving into the bottom right quadrant, and Bright Greeners want everyone in the top right. Leaning more Deep Green or Bright Green seems to hinge on whether you feel our environmental challenges are a canyon to be jumped (with technology) or a wall to pull up short of (adapting our behavior to impassable ecological limits). The behavior of one seems insane to the other. "What do you mean restrict technology!? How could you possibly consider accelerating our growth now!?" Bright Green is an easier sell because you can just keep doing what you're doing. In fact you should do it harder. Deep Green is uncharted waters and requires fairly radical behavior change. But if you think we're about to run into a wall, then radical behavior changes seems like the only logical choice. I don't think we'll know who is right for certain until it's too late to change course. Hope we pick the right one.
