Yea, symbolism is a strong point in Judaism. I'm actually atheist and don't support the Netanyahu version of Israel, but still enjoy being culturally Jewish and learning about the history of my people. If anything I am what would be considered a humanistic Jew.

Israel and Judaism are two completely different things to me. Symbols can work for anyone without having to buy the whole religious cow. Imho symbols and metaphors in early religions were used to communicate deep truths. Then, people being people, confuse the symbols for the truths. And the deep truths are common among all.
