I like what Duolingo did with streak freezing.
You'll inevitably miss a day or a few once in a while due to life.
By exchanging points that you earned for freezing the streak it gives you a way to be more relaxed once you've advanced in the "game".

At some point I deprioritized Duolingo so freezing wasn't enough. Lost my streak and haven't used Duolingo in a while. Such is life.
