They go out of date. They’re describing trees when you’re normally trying to understand a forest. They interrupt/ misdirect your brain parser as you grok the code. Enterprise systems are about structure and interaction not functions.

I mean inline narrative. Not doc comments.

Generally agree, but there are always useful exceptions - say for example you’re making a call to a proprietary IO or Encryption library instead of the standard one - you probably had a reason for doing so - inline comments are great for explaining exceptions to rules

A particularly complex algorithm can benefit from inline comments.
