I have a rule that I only smoke cigarettes when I'm in the US. 
I'm currently in the US, and just had a very nice encounter bumming a smoke and a light from a stranger. 

The middle class has failed to fill the social void created when smoking became taboo.

Haven't smoked a cigarette in 20 years, but I met a lot of cool and interesting people who were also stepping outside. Only part of it I miss.

Was referring my smoking days, but when it wasn't taboo, non-smokers would frequently join us for a chat.

How does one make a connection with people smoking when not also smoking? IME the sharing of a lighter is the necessary ingredient.
