In times like these, people seek validation that their peers share similar values—it’s natural. Common interests are what bind us, and today’s events only amplify that need.

I tend to stay out of conversations that shift into “we’re being serious now” territory. I understand why people want my input—being a combat medic veteran who served with elite forces and later transitioning to roles at the highest levels of leadership, my perspective carries weight. But the truth is, I don’t take sides. I have my own viewpoint, which evolves over time as life changes, my family grows older, and as I experience loss (RIP Mom and Dad, Jan 31, 2015).
