I agree with this sentiment now after digging deeper.  Expo might get you up and running faster, especially for someone newer to the React-Native ecosystem and toolchain, but it does a lot of abstraction that might be hard to sidestep in the future

This is why I'm a bit cautious about Expo.
They do have a lot of open source stuff which is great but they could also move into a direction that locks you into their proprietary ecosystem.

I don't have experience with Vercel and NextJS myself but many criticize Vercel because has apparently become harder and harder to use new NextJS features outside of Vercel ecosystem

I would say eas is to vercel as expo is to nextjs, that would be a better comparison imo
