curious whether anyone’s thought about how to replicate the UX of a locked account on a decentralized platform like farcaster. it seems like a really interesting and challenging problem!

prefigurative politics means building privacy, not just critiquing surveillance

the tricky thing is that you want a UX where:

if user A follows user B, then A can see all of B’s past posts

if user B revokes access to user A, then A loses access to both future and past posts

you’ll only ever get the second property approximately, or up to good faith, since A can archive all of B’s posts while they have access, but that’s also true in the centralized case.

my guess it’s that you’d want to have a situation where every post is encrypted with a distinct ephemeral key, and then the post key can be (re)wrapped to different audiences

i’m curious whether something like what we built for penumbra transactions could work here. writeup soon(tm), but basically we can hand out viewing keys of particular transactions, so interfaces don’t need access to long term view keys

I think the hard part is when the group that is allowed to view keeps changing rapidly

Like you indicated deeper in the thread, you can’t revoke what has been seen in that someone can screenshot it, copy it, etc. but you can terminate one’s ability to query it. I am publishing a whitepaper in four days that has its origins in solving this exact problem though it has grown to general queryability
