I have seen this claim, but do not find it to be a convincing explanation. When Russian intelligence hacked the Clinton campaign in 2016 they gave the raw data to Wikileaks which they knew would have no compunction about publishing it in full.

A foreign state and especially Iran would be very unlikely to give such data to Politico or a similar DC Beltway news outlet as they do not publish raw intel and would also be highly likely to suppress the story anyways.

My assessment is that this is likely a pressure campaign to ensure that the data is not published by characterizing it as emanating from a foreign state. That is separate question from whether it is newsworthy in general but I favor transparency and would like to see it and evaluate.

Microsoft mentioned on Friday a hack with ties to Iran of a high ranking official in a presidential campaign. Supposing it's the same case, which seems likely, isn't that hard to square with the campaign making up the Iran connection?

I understand your assessment that the release to Politico is strange. And that the Trump campaign would like to make the Iran connection. But my question is: why would *Microsoft* do that?

I think they are trying to draw this connection. But there are other aspects of it that don’t seem to fit with their modus operandi. I’d have to see more information to draw a conclusion.
