A Maryland bill proposing the creation of a commission to study reparations, including financial restitution, is expected to pass its final hurdle in the House of Delegates with only days left in the 2025 legislative session. Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready expressed confusion over advancing the bill amid the state’s historic $3.3 billion deficit, which is projected to grow to $6.7 billion by 2028. The bill, a priority of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, passed the Senate before Crossover Day in mid-March, the unofficial deadline for moving legislation between chambers for final approval. Similar commissions have been established in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, and Illinois. In 2024, California’s Reparations Task Force released an 11,000-page report recommending a formal state apology for racial injustices, including slavery, and financial compensation.

This is indeed good news. It is always the right time to do the right thing.
