๐จ The Money Diggers, 1831 by John Quidor ๐บ๐ธ oil on canvas, 40.5 x 53.2 cm Brooklyn Museum, USA About the artwork: "The Money Diggers" likely illustrates a scene from Washington Irving's "The Devil and Tom Walker," a story that involves buried pirate treasure and a deal with the devil. This subject would be typical of Quidor's interest in the themes of American legend and superstition. The scene probably shows the characters in the act of digging for treasure, possibly with an ominous or supernatural atmosphere conveyed through the dramatic use of lighting and shadow.

A mysterious story about greed and self-sacrifice. Washington Irving introduces the characters and their dark corners in an atmosphere of ambiguity and fear. The story is about a greedy man who makes an alliance with the devil to obtain money, sacrificing his wife in the process. It was painful.
