my 1 year old is starting his daycare this week. for parents who've been down this road, what's the best piece of advice for the transition? any lessons you learned the hard way?

Congrats! It’s a huge transition for parents and the child. It will be difficult for the first few days or weeks but personally I found preparing them for the daycare helpful. Talk to your child about spending the day at daycare, making new friends and learning new things prior to their first day.
