very true. an example I’ve experienced is telling somebody (tactfully) that they can change their own life. Empowering them with free will, and autonomy —then they resent me for it because they’d rather complain about bad cards.

people don't like to have their core narratives shaken. what some see as an empowering notion (you can change your own life), others see as blame (so this is all my fault?), a burden (you mean i have to fix this myself?), and fear of failure (what if i can't change it?). it's easier to outsource all of that emotion
