Feeling very disillusioned with Warpcast since discovering that some of my direct casts were deleted without my permission. It feels like it really flies in the face of the promise of web3—ownership. I get that the protocol has storage related deletions, but *not* paying for it is a choice and it's known up front.

Direct Casts are not part of the protocol at this time and they are not actually related to the storage enforcements of the Farcaster protocol. You have full control of your public posts. Your Direct Casts are deleted — due to a Warpcast specific policy. We implemented this policy (and announced it many times) because we have a strong desire to move the private messages to a sufficiently decentralized layer and there is no way for us to move all the messages as we have to apply some storage rules. With that being said I understand it is probably a frustrating experience to lose older private messages.

RE not being able to move the messages, even given the duplication inherent in sufficient decentralization, that's a technical hurdle. While it may not be easy to clear, lots of services/apps/companies have managed to move far, far more data successfully. What's different about DCs here?

Thanks for responding, appreciate the explanation. I do know that it's not part of the protocol (yet). But WC is practically synonymous with FC at this point, so policies here are pretty close to protocol. It's planned already, right? Anyway, my point is really that I think it sets an undesirable precedent to make those sorts of choices for a user. Even if it was announced a bunch of times. These are the exactly the sort of things that web3 critics point to as proof that it's no different web 2. I do respect the choice y'all made, it's yours to make. @dwr has always made it clear if you don't like something you can go build your own client. 100%. But WC is the flagship and it feels a little Dennis Rodman sometimes. All this to say, I chose the word disillusioned on purpose. I'm not going anywhere.
