I'm trying to transfer ownership of /justbuild to the homie @justbuild, but can't seem to push it through (keep getting the same error). Does anybody else have this issue?

The owner should try to set you as the moderator first and try to transfer after that. I believe we require moderator access first before getting an ownership on the channel.
