Maze gates for crossings (even dumb ones like gravel driveways) are proliferating everywhere in the northeast. So much wasted money, and they make these lovely trails more dangerous. Had to weave through ~2 dozen on this ride

Yeah a single post is better for anything other than catching bikers

Don’t really know! I think it is a speed calmer, and they’re almost exclusively going up on perpendicular road crossings. You can often go around them off of the asphalt. Posts would suffice for cars or ATVs.
